Marrying in Thailand or Perlis: Which Route Is Right for You

Thailand or Perlis: for Malaysian Muslims planning a second marriage, the practical decision usually comes down to these two. Both routes are open to anyone, and neither is inherently better. What differs is which one suits your circumstances.

Choosing between Thailand or Perlis for a polygamous marriage

The Perlis route in short

The Thailand or Perlis decision: how the Perlis route works

Between Thailand or Perlis, Perlis is the official route. The application goes through the Syariah Court and the Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIPs), using the SPPIM system. Once permission is granted, the solemnisation takes place and the marriage is registered.

Its main advantage is finality. Your marriage carries full standing from the first day, with no registration step left outstanding and no loose ends to resolve months later. You also do not need to be a Perlis resident, which surprises many people. Most of our clients come from elsewhere.

Total price is RM6,000, all-in with no hidden charges. The husband-to-be typically attends Perlis 3–4 times over the process, with an estimated timeline of 1 to 2 months.

The trade-off is time. The process follows the court schedule, which means the timeline is less within your control. Further detail is on our Perlis route page.

The Thailand route in short

The Thailand or Perlis decision: how the Thailand route works

Of the Thailand or Perlis options, Thailand involves fewer steps. The solemnisation is conducted at the Songkhla Provincial Islamic Council, and the documents are then endorsed at the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla before being used for registration back home.

For most people this is completed within three working days. That compression is the reason it is chosen, particularly where the intended wife is a foreign national or a recent convert and the alternative would involve a long chain of verifications in Malaysia.

The trade-off is that registration in Malaysia is a separate step afterwards. Skip it and the marriage may be religiously valid but leave you without official standing. Three package options are available: RM6,500 (4-day stay in Perlis, we handle everything through to registration), RM6,000 (two trips to Perlis), or RM2,300 (Thailand & Consulate only — you register the certificate yourself at a religious office near your location). Detail is on our Thailand route page.

Whether you choose Thailand or Perlis, the marriage ends up registered in Malaysia. The difference is the order of the steps and how long the whole thing takes.

Comparing the two on timing

Timeline comparison between Thailand or Perlis marriage routes

Timing is usually the deciding factor in the Thailand or Perlis question. Thailand compresses the solemnisation into a short trip, with registration following once you are home. Perlis front-loads the process through the court, after which everything is settled at once.

Neither timeline can be promised to the day, because both depend on how complete the documents are when the process begins. That part is within your control, and it is the part we take off your hands.

Which one is right for you

How to decide whether Thailand or Perlis suits your situation

There is no universal answer to Thailand or Perlis, and anyone who gives you one without asking about your situation is guessing. The factors that actually matter are your intended wife’s nationality and religious status, how much time you can take away from work, where you both live, and how soon you want the matter settled.

In one conversation we can usually tell you which route fits, and we will say so plainly if the one you had in mind is not the better option.

Frequently asked questions

Is one route more valid than the other?

No. A solemnisation that fulfils the pillars and conditions of nikah is valid in either case. The Fatwa Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia discussed marriages conducted in southern Thailand at its 52nd Muzakarah on 1 July 2002. What matters in both routes is that the marriage is subsequently registered in Malaysia.

Do I need to live in Perlis to marry there?

No. Most of our clients come from Selangor, Johor, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak. You do not need to relocate or change your address, and we arrange the scheduling so you attend only when required.

Which route is cheaper?

Cost depends on the scope you need rather than on Thailand or Perlis alone, since travel, documents and arrangements vary. We give a clear figure at the outset for whichever of the two you choose, with nothing appearing midway.

Can I change my mind after starting?

In most cases yes, particularly early on before documents are submitted. Tell us if your circumstances change and we will reassess whether Thailand or Perlis now makes more sense.

My intended wife is not Malaysian. Does that decide it?

It strongly influences the decision but does not settle it automatically. Nationality affects which documents are needed and how long verification takes. We prepare a list specific to her nationality once we know the details, and that usually makes the better route obvious.

What if I have already started one route?

Tell us how far you have got and what you already hold. We assess the position and continue from there rather than starting over.

A full overview of the service across both routes is on our polygamy in Malaysia page.

How long should I allow off work?

For the Thailand route, most people allow three working days plus travel. For Perlis, attendance is required on specific dates set by the court rather than in one continuous block, so it is usually a matter of taking individual days rather than a single stretch. We confirm dates as early as possible so you can arrange leave comfortably.

Can family attend the ceremony?

Yes, on either route. Some clients bring family and others prefer something simpler. Tell us in advance so arrangements can be made for the number attending.

Who arranges the guardian and witnesses?

We do, on both the Thailand or Perlis routes. This is not left to chance, because it determines whether the solemnisation is valid. We confirm the arrangements before the date is set.

What happens after the ceremony?

Registration in Malaysia follows on both Thailand or Perlis routes. On the Thailand route it comes once you return, using the endorsed documents. On the Perlis route it is completed as part of the process. Either way we guide you until the official certificate is in your hands.

Do I have to decide between Thailand or Perlis before contacting you?

No, and most people do not. Deciding is part of the first conversation rather than something you need to resolve beforehand. Describe your circumstances and we will set out both options with the trade-offs made clear.

Not sure which route fits you?

Tell us your circumstances and we will tell you plainly which of the two makes more sense, and why.
